Getting Started

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association provides opportunities for athletes in the most exciting Olympic action sports. It is driven by a vision to be best in the world with an emphasis on building character through strong personal values. The USSA's programs provide education, development and competition opportunities for young athletes up through national teams and the Olympic Winter Games.

U.S. Snowboarding offers competitions from the national level up through international events such as the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix and FIS World World Cups.  Below is general information on getting started in competitive snowboarding.

Steps to Athletic Advancement

Join USASA - Join USASA at local level to gain access to competitions in your local area. USASA offers grassroots competitions throughout the country.  USASA has over 500 events each year in regions across the country. Visit www.usasa.org for more information

Join a USSA Club - Join a competition Club to get professional coaching and logistical support. Click here for a listing of USSA Clubs in your area.

Take Part in Competitions - Pick the proper competition programs for your age and ability. Contact the event organizer or your competition club for entry information. 
Check the USSA competition calendar for your local area to select competitions. Take part in USSA scored competitions, with the USSA Competitor membership, to improve your ranking.

National Ranking - Compete in USSA scored competitions to gain a national ranking.

FIS Registration - As you advance up the pipeline with your ranking, you may be eligible for ranking on the International Ski Federation (FIS) ranking list. Check with your club coach for more information. FIS registration is managed through USSA. You can monitor your FIS ranking at www.fisski.com

Team Selection - As you continue to advance, you may qualify for U.S. Snowboarding Project Gold Camp, FIS Junior World Championships, and eventually the U.S. Snowboarding team.
